SPACE

This series of images was produced around an interpretation of the concept of space. This is Dejen, a very accomplished jazz saxophonist, and we discussed the use of space in music which led to this production style.

“Miles Davis, Randy Weston, Keith Jarrett, Jack DeJohnette, and Gary Peacock all cite (Ahmad) Jamal as a major influence in use of rhythm and space as well as his innovative use of multi-tonal melodic lines and his unique extended ‘vamps’.” Wikipedia

The use of temporal space, as in fewer notes can create more feeling, is one way to interpret space in music. Along with the concept of temporal space, I wanted to work in a way that isolates a subject to its basic premise and the use of excessive physical space allowed me a way to interpret Dejen. I’ve included some music Dejen played during our photo shoot.

These look like they could be album covers. (Album? Am I dating myself? ;) )

    Hi K-Hawk,

I believe kids nowadays call them CD’s, and its a jacket or sleeve or something like that! :)

I hoping Dejen thinks they should be album covers too.

    Thanks,
    Alec

I’m seeing sheet music, both in the single images and in combination.

My mind naturally starts to fill the space with sound, and I’m not even sure that has anything to do with there being a musician as subject, though it’s perfect that that’s what it is.

Seems like you’re onto something very interesting with this space/sound concept!

      Hi Amy,

Thanks for the response. I got a good push from another friend last night about working with this design and concept, so we’ll see where it goes. I need a little education first.

      Cheers,

I love Amy’s comment and can envision the space filled with music and sunshine (perhaps with a slight summer breeze). Nice job on the music in the first image getting it to pop against a white background with authenticity. Any of these images would make a lovely CD cover with plenty of room for copy on the back. Is this the application you envisioned?

Thank you for letting me be fan girl, it was a pleasure to meet Dejen.

      KG,

You’ve got the best fan work around! THANK YOU for the help, wouldn’t have happened with out you.

I didn’t really envision an application for the images. Just seemed fun to shoot and it was. Only after I saw the images that I thought there was a concept here for the right group, right album. It does seem to fit on some level with Dejen and his current band, though. So, we’ll see. It was more about me capturing something in a way that was consistent with what I saw in Dejen. That’s all I envisioned.

      HEy Denise,

Thanks for stopping by. To my knowledge, they’re for neither. We just shot it for fun, but there is a chance they would be used for a new CD.

      Hope you’re well,
      Alec
