My Photography friend, Martin Berg, sent me this From TED: “Taryn Simon exhibits her startling take on photography — to reveal worlds and people we would never see otherwise. She shares two projects: one documents otherworldly locations typically kept secret from the public, the other involves haunting portraits of men convicted for crimes they did not commit.” I think many of you will find some of the images and stories provocative. Wow! This is fascinating material. I wonder at what her research and access process must have been..!!
What she said about the space between the text and the photograph was intriguing – seems like this pairing often creates a clearer, fuller and more personal story. Some questions are answered, but hopefully this doesn’t make us complacent but rather gets us invested in a different kind of way, so we start to ask more and different kinds of questions…
Its very interesting to think about the effect of attaching words to still images. I like the way you put it…”gets us invested in a different kind of way.”
Great talk Alec. Thanks so much for spreading this about. I saw a 60 minutes special on the practice of photo lineups recently. Very eye opening. The whole talk made me want to take on a meaningful project with my camera!
