This image was made in Mesquite Sand Dunes. No trickery here, all in camera. The exposure was 40 minutes to capture the star trails. The foreground light was created during the exposure by taking my camera flash, walking around and flashing it. The light on me was made by Travis shining a flashlight on me at various intervals of rotation.

Technical: Canon 1DsMarkII, 16-35mm superwide zoom @16mm, ISO 100, 40 minute shutter speed, in camera noise reduction.

    Hi Alec-
Is this seriously a 40 minute shutter speed? Remember, I’m a rookie. This picture is incredible.

Love the competing circles of light, Alec. What a great idea to add yourself into the picture. The stars trails are wonderful. 40 minutes, WOW. Wonder when the last time was that I stayed still that long 8-)
    Great work

I wouldn’t say seriously, but I would say honestly :-P yes, there are some other digital tricks to do star trails, like stack a bunch of shorter duration images and using some third party software, but that’s not my gig. I like to come up with a concept and execute it…we did some tests the night before with “painting with light” and then on this shot implemented it. There was a lot of “what if” dialog between me and Travis and ultimately it just came down to “let’s try it and see what happens.”

Then we got lost trying to walk out of the dunes in the dark.

    Thanks for stopping by Meg!

    Hi Wes,

Thanks for being here and for the kind words. Believe it or not, we were out of the dunes by 7pm and enjoying a beer at the saloon in Stovepipe Wells. That’s a good day’s work, in my book.

    Hope all is well.

Alec, I have never seen this combination of effects done before. You have done a number of things that are rarely (if ever) done by others. You think outside the box more than “normal” people. I’m impressed. Keep on inspiring the rest of us!

Thesis done and signed off. Working on finishing stuff for this class and studying for my oral exams. I have my public presentation prepared and ready. Almost! Can’t wait to have more time to shoot!
