I’m in Savannah, GA for a photography workshop this week and arrived a day early to get out and do a little shooting. My friends Craig and Marti, and I got up at 5 am this morning and made our way over to Tybee Island. I’ll be returning there often this week, but wanted to get caught up a bit on the posts.
A number of you have commented directly to me about how much you enjoy some of the technical content on how an image is produced. If possible while I’m here, I will record a podcast on how this shot was made, along with a self-critique of the image. In the meantime, I’d love to hear your comments regarding it. Most importantly, we were out shooting and creating this morning…and I accidentally kicked a huge crab, or it kicked me…not really sure. Either way, I’m pretty sure I’m afraid of them.

Very evocative! Nice.
Very cool photograph! I love the color and both the sense of motion and stillness I get.
Have you thought about adding some contrast to the foreground beach to help balance the sky? Everything is so dynamic I kind of stop in that reflection. Perhaps some more tone or contrast could help?
The only other thing that I was thinking about is the reflection of the pole finishing so close to the edge of the frame or completely running out of it. I’m wondering if I would move around a little bit better if this idea finished in the frame with some room to spare. I like that you’ve just shown the horizon over the rocks… but I find myself getting caught up a little bit as I move up to the idea of the sun with it’s current placement. With the static ideas of the rocks and the pole being hurdles, I wonder if chopping a little bit off the relection of the pole would help ease one of them.
That little bird on top of the pole is another great detail that adds to the stillness/motion juxtaposition I feel.
I really digg it! I’m looking forward to the podcast. Rock on and enjoy The Next Step!
Totally love the sky. It’s hard to get a really good feel of the composition, though, with the website’s sidebar cutting into the photo. For example, I also wondered about that pole, but I can’t tell what i think about where it’s placed due to the sidebar interference. Completely and totally love the sky though. And I would’ve liked to see a big ass crab on the sand for full effect, or maybe that’s just a different topic.
Okay, duh, I realize now that it was my own fault that the photo had some “interference.” Alas, I am an airhead and should not be allowed to post on blogs. This photo, on the other hand, is flawless.
